This transcription of Mendelssohn’s octet for full orchestra was made in 2009 to honor the composer’s 200th anniversary. With careful study of his orchestral works, Maestro Lee has emulated Mendelssohn’s own orchestral language creating a new symphonic work in the spirit and style of the composer. This transcription has been performed by the Baltimore & Phoenix Symphony Orchestras. The 3rd movement incorporates the composer’s own orchestral transcription of the scherzo made in 1829 as a substitute movement for the third movement of his First Symphony.

Mendelssohn: Overture in C Major, Op. 24 transcribed for FULL orchestra by Yoon Jae Lee

Instrumentation: 2. 2. 2. 2 – 2. 2. (3). 0 – tp – str

Originally conceived as a work titled “Nocturno” for an 11-piece Harmonie in 1824, Mendelssohn revised the work for a full 24-piece wind ensemble in 1838. In a letter to his publisher Simrock, Mendelssohn mentions a version for strings but nothing more is known about whether or not Mendelssohn ever made that version. This 2016 transcription for full orchestra by conductor & arranger Yoon Jae Lee now makes this exuberant overture accessible to orchestras worldwide. The trombone parts are ad lib. Scores and performance materials are available through Ondine Press.

Mozart: Idomeneo Overture, K. 366 concert ending by Yoon Jae Lee

Instrumentation: 2. 2. 2. 2 – 2. 2. 0. 0 – tp – str

This newly composed concert ending to Mozart’s Idomeneo overture by conductor & arranger Yoon Jae Lee allows for a more conventional forte ending that is akin to other overtures by Mozart. Although the overture ends on the tonic (D Major), it ends softly because it leads directly into the opera. Unlike Carl Reinecke’s crude and unseemly version, this concert ending is based on themes and motifs that occur in the overture itself and stays true to the character of Mozart’s classical compositional style. It is a welcome addition to the concert overture oeuvre.

Popp (arr. Lee): La Chasse for Flute and String Orchestra, and Harp (ad lib.), Op. 250, No. 6

Instrumentation: solo flute, harp (ad lib), string orchestra

This new arrangement of La Chasse allows flutists to perform this work in public as a concerto. It is a wonderful addition to the flute concerto repertoire making this virtuosic showpiece available for competitions and orchestra concerts alike! The piano accompaniment has been carefully arranged idiomatically for string orchestra parts are simple enough to be played well by school and student orchestras. The harp part is optional and may be played with just string orchestra if harp in not available.

Rossini/Chopin (arr. Lee): Variations on ‘Non piu mesta’ for Flute and Orchestra

Rossini’s aria from La Cenerentola “Non più mesta” has been a popular theme since it was first composed and is one of his most recognized tunes. Many paraphrases and variations were written on it in the 19th century for various instruments including one for violin and orchestra by Paganini. One set of variations for flute and piano is attributed to a young Chopin, who is said to have composed it for his father. For this arrangement, the variations have been expanded with an introduction and coda from the opera. A newly written orchestral accompaniment in the style of Chopin and Rossini was made along with interludes between the variations to allow the soloist to rest. The result is a new 10 minute showpiece for flute and orchestra in the same vein as Chopin’s Variations on “La ci da rem la mano” and Rossini’s variations for clarinet and orchestra. The flute part from the variations has not been altered so it is hoped that this new compilation will be a welcome addition to the solo flute repertoire.
